A Forecasting Platform User Made $436,000 from Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.
An individual made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.
Sudden Shift in Forecasts
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January surged in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
A particular user, which registered on the site in December and made four bets, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Probability Spikes Before News Break
Trading information shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.
However these probabilities had increased to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.
"That trade has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," commented an industry expert.
A handful of other platform users also earned tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Politicians are starting to take note.
A new rule presented on Monday aims to prohibit federal workers from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in recent years, with users able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to politics.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.
Insider trading is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.
A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
