An Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Secure the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Since my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big 10-storey building on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, sat down, and began chatting with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He inquired what I did, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that night. The engineering student approached me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but immediately informed my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she responded: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for three years. One of the benefits was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his identity, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in so many ways. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to reach out at an Ivy League university and request employment. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a position in Switzerland where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
